Gateway EC Series EC14D Laptop
Gateway’s EC Series of UltraPortable notebooks has just added to their family with the emergence of the new EC14D configurations. Now you may think that this is just your typical small notebook but don’t jump the gun on that just yet. The EC14D series is a rare breed as it features an integrated DVD drive, a feature not typically seen on notebooks with an ii.6-inch display. According to a Gateway spokesman “The integrated DVD drive in such a compact device will be a huge benefit for customers who want the flexibility to enjoy and share different movies, music, photos and more stored on a DVD or CD.”
The EC14D is designed with the mobile person in mind. The EC14D has some pretty good specs about it. It has an 8X Super Multi double-layer DVD drive that allows users to read all types of DVD and CD media allowing them to enjoy popular movies and games on the fly. It also gives them access to their music files and photos for downloading and sharing on websites like Photobucket, Facebook or Twitter. To add to its mobility the EC14D has a 6-cell battery to allow you to run your notebook up to 8 hours on a single charge.
Connectivity wise the EC14D comes with an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection. This gives users fast and easy connection to the internet at any Wi-Fi hotspot. Along with the EC14D, Gateway is also offering new models in the rest of its EC Series notebook lines. Overall the EC14D looks to be a pretty good little notebook and one that is especially good for mobile notebook needs. If by reading this you have suddenly obtained the dire need to get one of these notebooks then you will be happy to know you don’t have to wait long. This device is said to be available by the end of January for a starting price of $629.99.
Sony VAIO L Series looks confused

Sony’s new VAIO L series is a concept all-in-one PC that marries both form and function that is guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of audience.
The merging of a powerful PC complete with a high-end 15.4″ LCD display and stylish polycarbonate chassis makes it a must-have device, if only it were real. Embedded within the VAIO L series is a Sound Reality audio chip and a pair of 3W speakers to give you the best on-the-go entertainment experience possible.
In terms of hardware specifications, we are looking at a foldable keyboard and touchpad, Intel’s Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz processor, a 120GB hard drive, and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM. When will this be available to the masses? Only time can tell, so you might as well start saving up for one today. IMHO, it looks lost in No Man’s Land, stuck between the ephemeral world of a notebook and desktop.

Choose a Laptop with Microsoft’s Windows PC Scout
Microsoft has launched a new website – Microsoft.com/Windows/PC-Scout. The website features a flash audio guided tour, which is meant to help you find a new laptop. It takes you through three segments, including Laptop 101, Recommendation, and Selection. Respectively, in each segment, you’ll learn everything you need to know about laptops in general, answer questions about what you need in a new laptop and get a few recommendations, and then you have the opportunity to make a final choice and purchase your laptop. The tour is not mandatory and you can skip any part or pause it if you need to come back to it later. Looking for a desktop? Check back later. Or says the male voice behind the website. Either way, you’re out of luck right now.
If you already know what kind of laptop you’re looking for, you can skip the first two sections and get straight to the selection part to choose your laptop based on a number of different categories. They are: price ($400 – $2600), screen size (8 – 19″), processor (1 GHz – 3GHz), RAM (1GB – 5GB), storage (50GB – 550GB), and weight (2lbs – 10lbs). You can also select whether or not you need an all around, mobile studio, movies on the go, power gaming, or work from anywhere laptop.
Microsoft claims the selection of laptops comes from a compiled list from Windows experts and the final selection has nothing to do with any sort of paid advertising. Right now, the website contains 46 various laptops, but more are likely to follow in the weeks ahead, especially with the release of Windows 7. The website isn’t too detailed – your average computer user should feel comfortable with it, and the most tech-savvy folks probably won’t see the need for it.
